Keeping ice cream cones in your pocket is illegal!

A lot of states still have a law on the books that states that you can’t keep an ice cream cone in your pocket. AL, GA, KY and NY for instance, but in NY it’s only illegal on Sundays.

Why have this silly law?

In the olden days ice cream sellers would keep the cones in their pockets to sell and serve ice ice cream. In those days, things were not very sanitary, especially pant pockets. The law had nothing to do with protecting people from putting melting deserts in their pockets, although that thought does make me crack a smile.

Is this law still needed today? Probably not, there must be many other laws and regulations that have to do with food prep that would make this one obsolete.

Another story is that this law was written to prevent horse theft, taking a horse is stealing but if you get a horse to follow you by putting a cone in your back pocket, would not beĀ  stealing. Do horses really like ice cream or ice cream cones? And in NY, only on Sundays?

I’m still looking for the actual article reference of this law for any state.
